My
name is Glenn Earp a
novice Genealogist and this Free information site is on
Genealogy and
the
Family History
of the EARP family from Australia.
Who am I...
I was born 25th February 1959 in "Lithgow"
a small country town in NSW Australia. I spent the first 3 months of
my life there before we moved to Cabrumurra NSW, the highest township
in Australia. At about age 4 we moved to Wollongong NSW where I still
reside.
In 1964 I started Primary School at Mt St Thomas
and in 1971 at Figtree High School. I started work in 1976
as an Electrical Apprentice for Stewarts and Lloyds Kembla Grange NSW,
in 1979 I married Kim and we have 2 sons Nathan and Nicholas.
How I became a novice Genealogist?
Around the mid 80's I first got the desire to pursue research into
My Family History if only fleeting. Then, in the late 90's my
sister Sharon sat down with our Grandfather and asked him to tell
her his life story and how and when the "EARP" family came to
Australia as he remembered the facts, this has been a great source
of information. A couple of years passed before I used this info
to update our Family tree, but it wasn't until 2007 that I started
to add this info to a software program that could be uploaded here
on the 'NET' and that was when I finally got hooked.
My
Family History starts with me and goes back
to... only time will tell. And,
no, as of yet I have found no ties to that infamous " Wyatt
Earp Clan". You know when I was growing up I was always asked
"are you related to Wyatt Earp!" Now days people struggle to pronounce or spell EARP let
alone know who Wyatt is or was!
Origins of the Earp Surname.
The Surname Earp is from the Anglo-Saxons, we know this
because the Churches coming out of the Dark Ages saved documents like
the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles and the Doomsday Book and these records,
preserved to this day, give us the opportunity to research the Earp
Surname.
During research of these documents the first record was found of the
Earp Surname in Lincolnshire where they were anciently seated as Lords
of the Manor.
Researchers have also noted that the Earp Surname was spelled in
different ways including Earp, Irp, Epp, Eppe, Erp, Erpe, Eirpe, Yrpe,
Yrp, Epps and these variations would occur even in reference to the
same person. The first referenced Earp spelling variation was found in
the year 1200 when Matthew Yrp held estates, later, in Yorkshire a
Henry Erpe was shown on Tax records and John Irp was in Sussex in
1332.
Migration to Ireland and America are places of note where many bearing
variations of the Earp Surname settled. Individuals of note bearing
the Earp Surname include Wyatt Earp (1848-1929) that famous
American frontier law officer and his brother Virgil Walter Earp
(1843-1905).
Research of the Earp Surname's Coat of Arms found that it did not
include a 'Motto'. A 'Motto' under most Heraldic Authorities is an
optional addition and a lot of families also declined to display their
'Motto'.
